Enterprise Thursdays at Sussex University

Sussex Univeristy hosts Enterprise Thursdays - a free weekly event for staff, students, alumni and the local business community. The event starts with a talk followed by networking. The focus is on business, charity or social enterprise often with a focus on technology.

Upcoming events include:

  • One Laptop Per Child - 24th January - Josh will talk about his journey from studying to be a research engineer, to working on the One Laptop Per Child Project for Belkin, via social enterprise competitions and a 6 month Fellowship in the US.
  • How I got my idea into reality and my Top Ten tips - 31 January - Paige Allen will discuss FruityFaces Ltd which sells funky and innovative fruit carrier cases, and was set up for two reasons - to promote healthy eating and to raise funds for children’s charities. Paige launched her company in May 2006, and has also experienced the terror of Dragon’s Den!!
  • From Bedroom to Boardroom (and the bits in between) - 7 February - Carly Read, Co-founder, Icon Live Ltd. In just 5 years Carly and her business partner Valerie Scott have grown their wholesale jewellery company to become one of the most successful businesses in Sussex, and currently employ over 1300 people. Carly will talk about how to get started, how to keep control of the business, and the challenges that lie ahead.
  • Enterprising Engineers - 21 February - Jon Markwell, Sussex graduate and founder of Inuda Ltd, together with the Institute of Engineering & Technology. A panel discussion between four technologists that have taken differing approaches to creating enterprising ventures from their software, electronic and mechanical engineering skills. Each of them has found a way to make money while doing what they enjoy.
  • Alan Jackson from Aptivate -28 February - Sussex alumnus and founder of Aptivate, a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to develop ICT services that facilitate communication for unconnected communities, empowering ordinary people across the developing world to improve their lives.
  • Grand Celebrations -8th of May (keep this date in your diary)
