The Second Life of Sussex University
By Rosie Sherry • Mar 5th, 2008 • Category: Business, EducationThe web team at Sussex University have created a 3D version of the university with Second Life, replicating the physical features of the real life campus.
Every user (or resident) can make their own character to represent themselves. The team behind the virtual campus see it as a tool that will encourage interaction and collaboration by using it as a tool to teach & hold lectures, hold virtual open days, showcase student work, deliver news…and of course there can also be a social aspect to it.
Tom, one of the developers says: “The online campus allows University members and visitors to get more out of being part of a real community. It’ll be interesting to see how it develops as users sign up and get involved.
“We’ll now be working with academics and the University’s Creativity Zone [part of the Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Creativity] to improve learning and teaching opportunities online, as well as developing the social networking side of things.”
Check out the news release or find out how to get started.
